1. SEO

First up we have SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. The purpose of SEO is to improve the online visibility of a business, specifically in search engines. It is more important than ever, as SEO drives 1000%+ more traffic than organic social media according to Bright Edge. So, people who work in SEO will do everything they can to make sure that when someone searches for a relevant term relating to the business, their website will appear.

For example, if a business sold garden furniture, they would want to make sure that when people were searching for things like “garden furniture”, “patio furniture” and “rattan furniture”, they were appearing near the very top of the first page of results.

There are around 200 ranking factors that Google’s algorithms use to decide where a website should rank for a particular keyword, and the job of people working in SEO is to try and manipulate as many of those things as possible and to do it better than competitors. The exciting thing about SEO is that the things that Google prioritizes are always changing, so you will always be learning new things and pushing yourself. SEO is such an interesting industry to be in and it gives you the chance to learn so much, from the more technical side to content strategies.

Across the country, there are fantastic SEO courses that will teach you practical skills to put you in a really strong position when applying for jobs. SEO is a great career path and should definitely be considered if you are interested in digital marketing.

2. Organic Social Media

Another route you can take for a career in digital marketing is social media. There are two main sections of the social media marketing that we will explore separately!

Firstly, we have organic social media, which refers to any of the free content that users see. So, this will involve actually running the account and coming up with a content strategy in terms of imagery and captions. Organic social media is so important, as it helps you to build a community and brand loyalty, giving you a strong long-term base for your business.

Working in organic social media, you are also likely to be able to get creative to create graphics to use on the social media channels, which is a fantastic skill to have. The best way to gain experience in this area is to create your own social media channel based on one of your passions, which might be fashion or food for example, and trial different things to grow your following. This is the perfect portfolio!

3. Paid Social Media

The second area of social media marketing is the paid side, which is where you would be responsible for the adverts that appear on people’s feeds across different social media platforms. This is another really creative role, as you would test and trial lots of different audiences to target using different adverts to find the combination that is most effective for a business.

You would also likely be involved in creating more graphic ads, as well as choosing the imagery and captions. Creating a successful social media advertising campaign can be difficult, but with the right training, it is a very rewarding career path that can make you a lot of money.

The best way to gain experience in this area is to do your research and potentially create your own ad accounts on Facebook (which also covers Instagram) and Snapchat. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but hands-on experience is the best way to learn about social media advertising platforms.

The two sides of social media marketing are very different and with some businesses, you might have the opportunity to do both in tandem. However, larger businesses will have separate teams for these two areas as they are so important.

Final Thoughts

The best thing about these things is that there are so many different courses online, so you can do your own research and then apply for jobs with an understanding rather than starting completely from scratch. Getting into a career in digital marketing will set you up for the future and give you a great set of transferable skills to utilize for years to come. So many companies are prioritizing tech-driven marketing strategies, so this is the ideal time to get involved. Get ready to potentially find your newest career path!
