Working life can be busy, overwhelming, and stressful, so often looking after ourselves physically and mentally is so important can drop to the bottom of our priority list.
Life is so much easier to handle when you are healthy and make the effort to put yourself first, which is what we are here to help you do.
1. Prioritise Your Diet
The first thing you need to do in order to live a healthier lifestyle when in a busy job to help maintain workplace productivity is to prioritise your diet. This can be the most difficult thing to get right, as it is so tempting to buy on the go, which not only costs a lot of money, but you often won’t make the healthiest choices.
So, over the weekend, set aside an hour to plan what you want to eat throughout the week and write a list of everything you need. Try to focus on meals that are quick and easy to make, so you are more likely to stick to your health plan throughout the week. For lunches, you can bulk make things like soup, pasta salads and rice dishes to take to work with you, so you know you’ve got healthy meals ready to go for the whole week.
If you are really short on time and this is not achievable, then you should look into healthier alternatives to meals on the go. You could try prepared meal delivery to have healthy and nutritionally meals delivered to your door. The good thing about these plans is you can choose how many meals you want/need, so if you know you are going to be out for lunch for two days, you can simply order a couple of meals less. You can also add snacks and breakfasts if that’s what you’d like! Whilst this is the slightly more expensive option, it is a great way to stay healthy and look after yourself when you’re in a rush.
2. Stay Hydrated
Our next tip is to make sure you stay hydrated. Drinking lots of tea and coffee can be tempting in a busy job to give you the boost you need, but you will notice a difference naturally if you switch some of the caffeine out for water. You should be drinking between 2.7 and 3.7 litres of water a day to make sure that you are properly hydrated, as every single cell, tissue and organ in the body uses water to function healthily, including the brain. When you are dehydrated, you will really notice it, finding it hard to concentrate and feeling quite lethargic.
So, make sure that you take a water bottle to work with you and refill it as many times as necessary throughout the day. It’s also good to start your day with a glass of water, so you know that you are already well hydrated before you get to work. If you’re not a fan of water on its own, try adding chopped-up fruit like oranges and lemons, cucumber and mint or mixed berries to add a healthier kick of flavour than if you were to drink sugary squash.
3. Find Balance Over The Weekend
When life is busy Monday to Friday, it can be tempting to blow off some steam over the weekend with lots of drinking and unhealthy eating. Whilst this is natural, to help you feel healthier and to really unwind over the weekend, try to find a balance between enjoying life and looking after yourself.
This might be heading out for a nice walk near the beach or seaside on Saturday morning before you go for a few drinks with your friends or swapping out your Friday takeaway for a delicious homemade meal that will be so much more nutritious. If you go out a lot over the weekend, try alternating your alcoholic drinks with a glass of water so you can enjoy your Sunday more.
We understand that a healthy balance can be hard to get right, but once you do it, you will feel so much better about it.
4. Make Time For Things You Love
Last but not least, to look after your mental health, you need to make time for the things you love. Many people write off Monday-Friday when they have a busy job, but even setting aside a couple of hours once a week to spend time doing something that relaxes you is so important. This might be going to play tennis with a friend, going to the cinema or restaurants recommended by foodies, trying a new recipe, doing your favourite gym class, reading a book, or creating a new piece of art.
Work is a big part of many people’s lives, but you need to also make sure that you are looking after yourself, and this is a great way to do it.
Final Thoughts
When you implement these changes into your daily routine, you won’t have to make many sacrifices, but you will feel more refreshed and ready to take on each day. Putting yourself first is a must when you live a fast-paced lifestyle, so slowly try to make these changes to look after your physical and mental health, which is more important than ever.
