Why Physical Security and Cyber Security Are Both Important For Your Business

The modern world is vulnerable to cyber and physical attacks.

Whilst physical security is often a priority, cyber security may get pushed back into your priority list.

It is more important than ever to ensure you have some form of cyber security for your business as well as physical security.

What Is Physical Security?

Physical security is anything to protect your physical property or perhaps your team. This may be security at your door, fobs to get into your building, or safes to keep physical resources safe.

You may invest in security specialists to help find the right protection for your business. You will often come across security in luxury shops such as jewellery stores, as well as government buildings, hospitals, and office blocks. These are there to protect the building and usually be at a door or patrolling corridors of a building.

Why Physical Security Is Required For Cyber Attacks?

Something that is often overlooked is the fact that cyber-security and physical security go hand in hand. For example, security cameras are often hijacked, allowing cyber hackers to access surveillance feeds, meaning a cyber-attack then aids a physical attack.

The vast majority of businesses are heavily reliant on technology, and all businesses are susceptible to cyber-attacks, as, for a cybercriminal, it is relatively simple to use a botnet to hack into a business’s system. Botnets result in multiple computers being infected with malicious software and manipulated without an owner’s knowledge. You can get malware software to protect your business to a certain extent, but physical security needs to work with a business cyber security team to ensure the company is safe.

There have been countless data breaches that have put companies at risk, whether it’s a result of BYOD (bring your own device), a lack of cyber security, or physical security. It isn’t just the companies that are at risk either, it’s the customers of that business. For this reason, you need exceptional malware software and physical security, including rooms where vital data is secured.

Why Cyber Security Is Important

Although you may have a security office to protect a server room, it will also need a cyber security team. A cyber incident response team will also be required if they manage to bypass both physical and cyber security.

Cyber security is there to protect private and confidential data, identity, health information, and any other important data. If you do not have a cyber security program in place, it leaves your company vulnerable to any cyber-attacks.

It isn’t just important data that can be corrupted. It can also ruin relationships with customers, as breaches can tarnish the relationship and cause them to lose trust in your company. With companies relying on technology more than ever, cyber-attacks are also becoming much more complex, making it easier for a cyber attacker to get in. Invest in a cyber security team now and your business will reap the benefits in the future.

Different Cyber Threats

There are many different cyber-attacks out there that you need to be aware of. Running cyber threat courses with your employees is definitely worthwhile, and also circulating any new threats that they should be looking for, so everyone is working together to keep the business safe.

Malware

Malware is a common cyber-attack that many companies will become victims of. This is where the software will be created by a cybercriminal that will either access and/or steal data on your computer. Some of the common malware include viruses, spyware, adware, and ransomware.

Phishing

Phishing is where an email will get sent to a user which they will then open, potentially click a link, and then be involved in a cyber-attack. It will usually contain a folder or a file that you then download. Once this file has been downloaded, they will release viruses on your computer which will corrupt or steal data. This is one of the more common cyber-attacks that companies fall victim to. With more people investing in tech like cryptocurrency, these scams are appearing much more than ever before, so make sure that if you do invest in crypto, you know exactly what you should be looking out for to keep your finances safe.

Ransomware

This is a form of malware that targets systems and makes them unusable once encrypted. Once the system has been encrypted, the hacker will ask for a payment as a bribe to make the system usable again.

Summary

As you can see, there are many reasons why you need both cyber security and physical security, and often, the two are very closely connected. If your company stores a lot of private and confidential data, you need to ensure that it is protected correctly.
